Tooth Extraction in Mission Viejo, CA

Nobody wants to lose a tooth. But when a tooth is too damaged to save, removing it is what protects the teeth around it and stops the pain. At Vartanian Dental Group in Mission Viejo, extractions are gentle, your comfort comes first, and you leave with more than a gap: you leave with a clear plan for what happens next.

When a Tooth Needs to Come Out

We always try to save a natural tooth first. Extraction becomes the healthiest option when:

  • Severe decay has progressed past the point where a filling or root canal can help
  • Infection threatens to spread to surrounding teeth
  • An impacted tooth, most often a wisdom tooth, is trapped beneath the gums and causing pain, swelling, or infection
  • A tooth is broken or injured beyond repair
  • Orthodontic treatment needs space to align your bite properly

If your tooth can still be saved, we will tell you. You will get an honest recommendation backed by digital X-rays and 3D scans taken right here in our office.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth are the most common extraction we perform. When they erupt cleanly and have room, they can stay. When they come in sideways, crowd their neighbors, or stay trapped under the gums, they cause pain, swelling, and infection that only gets worse with time.

Dr. Vartanian performs wisdom teeth extractions with precision and careful attention to your comfort, and our multidisciplinary team handles complex impacted cases through our oral surgery services in the same office. No referral across town, no starting over with a new team.

What to Expect During Your Extraction

Exam and imaging

We confirm the tooth cannot be saved using digital X-rays and 3D scans, then explain your options and the full cost in writing.

Complete numbing

The area is fully numbed before we begin. You may feel pressure, but not sharp pain. Nervous patients can ask about oral and IV sedation for deeper relaxation.

A gentle removal

Using careful, gentle techniques, the tooth is removed while you stay comfortable and informed throughout.

Aftercare you can actually follow

You go home with clear written instructions, and our team is a phone call away if anything feels off.

A plan for the gap

Most extracted teeth should be replaced to protect your bite. We discuss options like dental implants, bridges, or dentures before you leave, including bone grafting to preserve the socket if an implant is in your future.

Tooth Extraction
Cost & Insurance

The cost depends on whether the extraction is simple or surgical, and whether you add socket preservation for a future implant. After your exam, you receive one written quote that covers everything, with no fees added later.

We accept most PPO and HMO plans and will verify your benefits before treatment, so you know your out-of-pocket cost in advance. Monthly payment plans through CareCredit and Citi are available. See our financing options for details.

Recovery After a Tooth Extraction

Initial recovery takes a few days, and complete healing of the site ranges from two weeks to a month depending on the complexity of the extraction. The first 24 to 72 hours matter most. Stick to soft foods, avoid hot or spicy items, and do not drink through a straw, since the suction can disturb the healing site. Skip smoking for the same reason. Mild discomfort is normal and is easily managed with medication.

Follow the aftercare instructions and most patients are back to their normal routine quickly, with the extraction site healing quietly in the background.

One Office for the Extraction and What Comes After

An extraction at a referral-only office ends with a goodbye. Here it ends with a plan. Because Vartanian Dental Group is multi-specialty, the same team that removes your tooth can place your implant, fit your bridge, or treat the gum disease that put the tooth at risk in the first place. Dr. Vartanian has practiced in Mission Viejo for 12 years, and patients have left more than 1,300 Google reviews with a 4.9 star average.

You will find us on the first floor of Pacific Canyons Medical Center at 26302 La Paz Rd #203, off the I-5 at La Paz Road. Patients come to us from across the city and nearby Rancho Mission Viejo, Lake Forest, Laguna Niguel, Rancho Santa Margarita, and Aliso Viejo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not during the procedure. The area is fully numbed, so you feel pressure but no sharp pain. Afterward, mild discomfort is normal for a few days and is easily managed with medication.

Initial recovery takes a few days. Complete healing of the site ranges from two weeks to a month, depending on the complexity of the extraction. Following your aftercare instructions is what keeps healing on schedule.

Stick to soft foods for a few days and avoid hot or spicy items. Do not drink through a straw, since the suction can disturb the healing site.

Dry socket happens when the protective blood clot at the extraction site is dislodged, exposing the bone beneath. It is uncomfortable but avoidable: no straws, no smoking, and gentle care around the site for the first few days. If pain increases after day two instead of fading, call us

It depends on the reason for the extraction and its location. Wisdom teeth are not replaced, but most other teeth should be, to protect your bite and jawbone. Options like implants, bridges, or dentures restore both function and appearance.

It depends on whether the extraction is simple or surgical, which is why we give you a written quote after your exam, before anything begins. We verify PPO and HMO benefits for you, and CareCredit and Citi payment plans are available.
