Deep Dental Cleaning

What is the difference between a regular dental cleaning and deep dental cleaning? Should you have a Deep Dental Cleaning? How often should you get a deep dental Cleaning? Many of these question and more will be answered in this article.

At the Vartanian Dental Group in Mission Viejo, we specialize in taking care of patients with gum disease that require a deep cleaning. If you are like me, you visit the dentist about 2 to 3 times per year for your regular cleaning. I have always had a problem with my gums and the probing process. My dentist and hygienist always tell me when I have a few deep pockets in my gums. What I didn’t realize, is these deep pockets in my gums can get better each visit when I floss on a regular basis. It is only when I get lazy and only floss a few times a week that I get in trouble on next visit because the gums get worse, not better. Well, now I am paying for my laziness, as I now have to go in for a deep cleaning at The Vartanian Dental Group in Mission Viejo. It’s my own fault for not doing as good of a job as I could have when it comes to my oral hygiene and brushing and flossing my teeth.

During these regular visits, you will have x-rays taken, you will have your gums probed and you will also have your teeth professionally cleaned and polished. One way to check for gum disease is to probe your gums and if the readings are 4mm deep or greater or if there are periodontal pockets or areas where the gum has pulled away from the tooth, then you may have the beginnings of gum disease. The good news is that it is totally treatable, curable and preventable in the future by taking action. The potential of this happening is very likely, as 64 million people living in America have or have had gum disease.

A deep cleaning is needed to remove tartar, bacteria and debris that have collected under the gum line. The presence of tartar under the gum line is how and where the bacteria is collected and can cause redness, inflammation and even an infection. If left untreated, this will continue to grow and spread throughout your mouth eventually causing loose teeth in your mouth, bone loss or even the loss of your teeth.

For deep cleaning, The Vartanian Dental Group in Mission Viejo will apply a local anesthetic or numbing before the procedure is started. Tartar, plaque and debris are removed above and below the gum line. The root of the tooth is then smoothed and shaped to remove bacteria during the deep cleaning. Finally, you may be prescribed antibiotics for healing. At The Vartanian Dental Group, we usually will treat one quadrant at a time, so two visits may be required to complete this service. You will then be given after care instructions including when you can resume your regular oral hygiene routine including brushing and flossing. You should always be concerned with receding or inflamed gums. The Vartanian Dental Group will fix your gum disease and have you smiling again in no time. Call to schedule your appointment today!
