The build-up of plaque, which contains bacteria, can lead to the beginning of tooth decay and gum disease. Similarly, tartar build up makes the smile less attractive and once build up begins, can only be removed by a professional, your hygienist. I did not know this, but some foods vs. other foods cause more build up than others. The first rule of thumb is to avoid sour candy. Bread, alcohol, potato and soda pop are all foods to avoid as the body naturally converts those into sugar, which get trapped between teeth and gums and causes the plaque and tartar described above. Dentists will also recommend avoiding anything hard such as a lollipop, hard candy or even ice as many cracked and chipped teeth happen this way. Sticky foods like taffy, cotton candy or even dried fruits and can get stuck between the gums and teeth and that will lead to plaque and tartar build...
Wisdom Teeth – Do they always need to be pulled?

Wisdom Teeth – Do they always need to be pulled?

Wisdom Teeth – Do they always need to be pulled? When wisdom teeth first come in, sometimes they may be impacted. This is why they almost always need to be pulled. Wisdom teeth, or third set of molars, are often pulled because there simply isn’t enough room in the mouth to fit all the teeth. For those who still have their wisdom teeth, they came in with enough room to keep them. While this rarely happens, I can warn you about getting your hopes up. Impacted teeth will normally need to be extracted by a professional surgeon. At the Vartanian Dental Group in Mission Viejo, we have the best oral surgeons in Orange County. Located off the 5 Freeway at La Paz, they are centrally located in South Orange County, making it convenient for all Orange County residents to visit our office. Sometimes they can be pulled by your dentist, although in most cases, you will need an oral surgeon.   For most people, wisdom teeth emerge usually around the ages of 17 – 25. One question a lot of patients have is, “Do we need to pull the wisdom teeth or can they be left in the mouth”. For many years, there has been a lot of controversy as to the need to remove or not to remove these teeth. Here’s a good rule of thumb, if the teeth do not cause any harm or pain, it is usually fine to stay in place. This usually means there is enough room in your mouth to allow the wisdom teeth to fully come in. If they cause you a lot...

Besides, at 4 pm, I’m usually getting hungry, so I start looking for a snack, right before dinner, adding extra calories to my daily intake that I don’t really need. Can you hear me? One of the most difficult thing for kids is to get comfortable with going to the dentist. By the time most kids are 9 years old, they have usually had a bad experience at the dentist. We have a nine year old son who had been to the dentist many times now and has no problem going. That wasn’t always the case in our family. We had Medical for our insurance and chose a dentist under the Medical plan near our home. It was one of those children’s only dentists, so I thought since they specialize in kids dentistry, they would be the best choice for our family. Boy was I wrong! The only thing they specialized in was turning and burning kids to bill the insurance companies and get their money! One time I went with him to the dentist and all I heard was screaming from the dentist chair. It was my kid having a horrible time and they weren’t even nice or comforting to him. I was flabbergasted by the treatment there. Trust me, that was the last time we to that children’s...

This is a micro-surgical procedure where Dr. Tyson Curtis, DDS will open up the gum tissue near the tooth to see the underlying bone and to remove any inflamed or infected tissue. Finally, Dr. Tyson Curtis, DDS will remove the very end of the root. I have had this procedure done myself and where I once had severe pain, now is pain free. A small filling may be placed to seal the end of the root canal and possibly a few self dissolving stitches or sutures may be required...
